Five Key Tips for Daily Maintenance of Diesel Generators – Save Money & Make Them Last Longer

Why is maintenance important?

Many users think that as long as a diesel generator can run, there’s no need to worry. But when problems such as hard starting, black smoke, high fuel consumption, or frequent breakdowns occur, they realize the importance of maintenance.

In fact, regular servicing not only extends the service life of the unit but also significantly reduces repair costs.

Today, Taikang Power has summarized 5 practical maintenance tips to help your generator run longer and more reliably.

Tip 1: Engine Oil

  • Check oil level regularly and keep it within the recommended range

  • Replace oil according to operating hours or the manual (generally every 250 hours)

  • Use genuine brand and correct grade oil to avoid poor lubrication

Tip 2: Three Filters (Air, Oil, Fuel)

  • Air filter: Clean dust or replace regularly to prevent dirt from entering the cylinders

  • Fuel filter: Replace every 250–300 hours to avoid injector blockage

  • Oil filter: Replace together with engine oil to keep the lubrication system clean

Tip 3: Cooling System

  • Inspect radiator for blockages or leaks

  • Replace coolant regularly (avoid long-term use of tap water)

  • Ensure fan belt tension is appropriate

Tip 4: Battery

  • Check electrolyte levels regularly

  • Keep battery clean and terminals free of oxidation

  • Recharge periodically during long downtime to prevent power loss

Tip 5: Proper Load Management

  • Keep generator running at 70%–80% of rated load for best performance

  • Avoid long-term low load (<30%) to prevent carbon buildup and black smoke

  • Never run under frequent overload conditions
